We will walk you through our Tanzania Safari Packing List which demonstrates what to wear in Tanzania, other essential items to include, things you should avoid packing, and various tips and tricks to help streamline your preparation.

Tips and Tricks for Packing in Tanzania Safari Tours

Before delving into the specific items, it’s crucial to understand the general context of what you’re packing for. Your Packing List Tanzania Safari should be a mix of practical and comfortable clothing, personal hygiene items, and gear to protect you from elements like the sun and insects. Some essential packing tips to keep in mind include:

  • Pack Light. We can’t stress enough the importance of packing light. You are allowed to carry only 15 kg (including check-in and hand luggage). Hence pack soft and light to avoid putting yourself and the pilot in a difficult situation.
  • Layer Up. The best way to dress up for game drives is by putting on layers of clothes. Dress warmer in the morning and as the day progresses remove layers to tolerate the rising temperatures. You can put back the layers once it’s evening again.
  • Safari has No Dress Code. As such there is no dress code on safari. All you can do is wear some comfortable clothing made up of three layers:
  • Short sleeves T-shirt/ Tank top
  • Long Sleeve T-shirt/ thin hoodie T-shirt
  • Zip-up jacket
  • Cover Up. Wear long sleeve T-shirts and trousers to protect yourself from the harmful rays of the Sun. This will also protect you from painful bites of mosquitoes and tse tse flies.
  • Blend with natural surroundings. Wear neutral colours to camouflage yourself. This will hide the dust, and mud and you can blend easily with the natural surroundings.

Some Important Information:   Tanzania banned plastic usage in 2019. So, do not carry any plastic. It’s strictly forbidden.

Clothing – A Crucial Part of Your Packing List for a Safari in Tanzania

Packing List for a Safari in Tanzania

When packing for a safari, clothing should be at the top of your list. Your Safari Tanzania Packing List should include:

  • Lightweight, Breathable Clothing: Daytime temperatures in Tanzania can be quite hot. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colours to stay comfortable and blend with the surroundings. Avoid bright colours and dark shades, as these can attract insects.

Long-Sleeved Shirts and Trousers: Despite the heat, long-sleeved shirts and trousers are recommended to protect you from sunburn, mosquitoes, and thorny vegetation.

Warm Clothing: Nights on safari can be surprisingly cold. Don’t forget a fleece or a light jacket.

Swimwear and Cover-ups: Most safari lodges in Tanzania have swimming pools. Don’t forget to pack your swimwear and a cover-up.

Keeping the above point into consideration, below is a list of tops, trousers, and undergarments that female travellers must pack for Tanzania Safari Tours.

Footwear – Follow the Principles of Protection & Layering

Tanzania Foot Wear

Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes for those on-foot safari adventures. Here are a few points to consider when packing footwear for Safaris in Tanzania.

  • Closed-toe, rubber-sole shoes like sneakers with socks are recommended for Safaris in Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater to prevent insect bites and protect from mud or dust.
  • Heavy hiking boots are unnecessary as no intensive walking is involved; they also take up much space and weight.
  • Sandals or flip flops can be brought for use in lodge pool areas, and casual shoes for lodge wear if desired.
  • Avoid black shoes to deter mosquitoes and tse tse fly bites.

Accessories – Safari Essentials

Accessories can enhance your comfort during your Safari in Tanzania. Remember, the goal is to keep it light yet functional.

  • Wide-brimmed Hat and Sunglasses: Protect yourself from the harsh African sun with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protected sunglasses.
  • Scarf or Bandana: A scarf or bandana is versatile – it can protect your neck from the sun, serve as a cover-up, or shield your face from dust.
  • Gloves: If your safari extends into the colder months (June to August), a pair of gloves will keep your hands warm during chilly morning game drives.

Personal Care Items – Essential Inclusions in Your Safari Packing List for Tanzania

  • Travel-sized Toiletries: Pack small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and toothpaste. A travel-size hand sanitiser is also a must.
  • Personal Medications and First Aid Kit: Remember to pack any personal medications you may need. Also, a small first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers can be handy.
  • Sunscreen and Insect Repellent: The African sun is intense, and the bugs can be relentless. Protect yourself by packing high-SPF sunscreen and insect repellent.

Lastly, you will want to bring along some essential gear for your Tanzania Safari Tours.

  • Binoculars. To get the best views of wildlife, a good pair of binoculars is indispensable.
  • Camera. You’ll want to capture the memorable moments of your safari. Bring a camera, but also remember extra batteries or a power bank as charging facilities may be limited.

Sustainable Travel – An Important Note for Your Packing List Tanzania Safari

When you’re creating your Safari Tanzania Packing List, consider the environmental impact of your travel. Opt for eco-friendly products when you can, such as biodegradable toiletries and reusable water bottles.

Respect the Wildlife and Environment. While it’s not an item on your packing list, it’s crucial to remember that you’re a guest in the wild. Keep a respectful distance from animals, don’t litter, and follow all guidelines provided by your safari guides.

Document Essentials – Often Overlooked on the Packing List for a Safari in Tanzania

Tanzania Safari Documents

While it’s easy to focus on physical items, don’t forget the important paperwork.

  • Passports and Visas: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your planned date of return. Citizens of many countries require a visa to enter Tanzania, so check the current requirements and apply in advance.
  • Travel Insurance Documents: It’s crucial to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellation, and lost baggage.
  • Vaccination Certificates: Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.

Things You Should Avoid Packing on Tanzania Safaris

We at Gifted African Adventures advise not bringing along several bulky items during your Tanzania Trips for a variety of reasons. Some of these items are-

Hair Dryers– Most accommodations we’re using do not have adequate electrical power to support a hair dryer. Considering that early morning safari drives are typical, showers are generally taken during the day, providing plenty of time for your hair to naturally dry.

Portable Music Devices– Keeping the environment serene and undisturbed is crucial during safaris. And, loud music can be disruptive to wildlife and fellow guests. Bear in mind that our accommodations will often be in canvas tents.

Laptops– Unless your trip necessitates work or daily photo backup to a hard drive (which might be a worthwhile consideration), we suggest not bringing a laptop. The rugged roads and dust can harm your device, and it can be a distraction from fully immersing yourself in this unique adventure.

Tripods– Unless your trip itinerary includes night sky photography or capturing sunset shots at the lodge, bringing a tripod may not be necessary. Tripods are often difficult to operate within a safari vehicle. They can also be heavy and take up significant luggage space.

Makeup– This is entirely subjective, but we believe you might benefit from leaving behind heavy makeup products and adopting a more natural look. The atmosphere at the lodges is casual, and the combination of mosquito repellent and sunscreen can make it uncomfortable to wear additional makeup. Consider packing essentials like mascara, lipstick, and concealer, but leave the rest at home.
