Trekking
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a remarkable adventure, and each of its trekking routes offers a unique experience. One major aspect to consider when planning your Kilimanjaro trek is the distance you’ll walk each day.
Different Kilimanjaro Routes have varying daily distances, which can affect your experience and your ability to acclimatize to the altitude. In this guide, we’ll explore the daily walking distances on various Kilimanjaro routes to help you choose the one that suits your preferences and abilities.
Machame Route
The Machame Route is renowned for its stunning views and demanding terrain, making it one of the most picturesque but challenging paths up Kilimanjaro.
Covering a distance of about 37 miles (62 kilometers), this route typically spans a duration of 6 to 7 days.
Marangu Route
The Marangu route, often nicknamed the “Coca-Cola” route, stands out as the simplest and most direct path to Kilimanjaro’s summit.
Covering a distance of around 43 miles (70 kilometers), this route typically spans 5 to 6 days. Unlike other Mt Kilimanjaro Routes, it features accommodations in huts throughout the journey.
However, it’s worth noting that the Marangu route entails using the same trail for both ascent and descent, which can result in higher foot traffic. As a result, we offer it exclusively as a private climb option.
Lemosho Route
The Lemosho Route, situated on Kilimanjaro’s western side, offers a more extended and less-travelled journey.
Covering roughly 43 miles (70 kilometers), this route typically unfolds over a span of 7 to 9 days.
Its remoteness provides a serene trekking experience, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a less crowded and immersive adventure on Africa’s tallest peak.
Rongai Route
The Rongai Route, hailing from Kilimanjaro’s northeast, boasts breathtaking vistas and offers a more peaceful trekking experience.
Spanning around 40 miles (65 kilometers), this route typically encompasses 6 to 7 days.
Its tranquil ambiance and stunning panoramas make it an attractive choice for those seeking a quieter journey to the summit of Africa’s tallest mountain.
Northern Circuit Route
The Northern Circuit, a newer addition to Kilimanjaro Routes, offers captivating scenery and optimal acclimatization chances.
As the longest route, it spans between 56 to 62 miles (90-100 kilometers).
Its remote nature lends it the distinction of being the quietest path on the mountain, providing trekkers with a serene and undisturbed journey to the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Well Gifted can organise everything, from Kili hike to safari and even a wedding on Zanzibar! The wedding day was organised very well. Flower arrangement was spot on, ceremony was beautiful and dinner was yummy (freshly grilled seafood). We had such an amazing day! Unforgettable memories…

An amazing family trip, unique and special and mainly thanks to gift 'the hunter' who accompanied us during the whole journey, explained, taught and shared his life with us. If we go back to Tanzania, it's only with 'gift' as a guide.

The entire experience was amazing and all because of the instructor we got, Gift.
Has an enormous knowledge about the nature, wild animals and the entire environment. Knew to always patiently take us to the best spots, and above all he cared about our health and wealth more than anything.
