Serengeti National Park is located in north-central Tanzania and covers the eastern Mara region and the northeastern Simiyu region. The park covers an area of 14,763 sq. km. and contains over 3,700,000 acres of savannahs. It’s partially adjacent to the border of Kenya and is northwest of the nearby Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The ecosystem and topography of Serengeti National Park are extremely varied and feature a blend of woodlands, riverine forests, open savannah grasslands, acacia trees, and whistling thorns.
Serengeti National Park is surrounded by game reserves and designated wildlife areas from all different sides. This includes the Maasai Mara National Reserve in the northern region, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the south, Lolindo Game Controlled Area in the east, and the Maswa Game Reserve in the west.
The central region of the park is called Seronera and it has an airstrip where most charter flights land. The area also has a small river where herds of animals gather. Accommodation options are also varied in the region with lots of luxury and mid-range choices.
The Eastern section of the park is where most photographic safaris happen with the highlight being the Gol Kopjes. The northern Serengeti is where the Great Migration Serengeti happens in full flow.
The area of Southern Serengeti is very busy during the calving season, which runs from late January to March. While the remote region of the Western Corridor is primarily known for playing host to the Grumeti River crossings.
