Great Migration Serengeti

The Great Migration is one of the most spectacular natural events on Earth and it takes place in the Serengeti region of Tanzania. It involves the movement of millions of wildebeests, zebras and other herbivores across the Serengeti Plains in search of water and fresh pastures. The Great Migration Serengeti is an annual event which spans several months and is a dramatic part of the Serengeti National Park ecosystem.

Wildebeests Migrate information

Wildebeests migrate in search of fresh pastures and water as they follow the seasonal rains and grass growth patterns. As they are herbivores, they generally depend upon the grasses of the savannah for their survival. As the seasons change, the grasses in one area may become depleted and the great herds must move to a new area where the grazing is still growing.

The Best Time To Visit Serengeti to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration is between December and August. The migration cycle is a continuous journey of animals throughout the year with different events taking place at different times. The southern Serengeti National Park is the best place to see the wildebeest calving from December to March while from May to July, the animals move towards the western corridor where they cross the Grumeti River. In July and September, the dramatic Mara River Crossing happens.

The Serengeti’s Calving Season is a noteworthy time for the great migration. During this time, thousands of wildebeests give birth to their young in a synchronized event. The calving season usually takes place between December and March in the southern Serengeti plains. And it’s also a golden period for predators who take advantage of newborns. During this time, around 8,000 new babies are born in a day.

The Mara River Crossing is a highly awaited event during the Serengeti Migration Safaris. This is when the great herds move a mass across the Mara River in a seemingly endless stream in search of fresh grazing. This journey is fraught with danger as the animals must navigate the attacks of the predators like crocodiles and lions. It is an awe-inspiring sight that takes place between July and September each year.

The cycle of the Serengeti Wildebeest Migration begins with the birth of wildebeest calves between January and March. As the rains cease in May, the herds begin their journey toward the north in search of fresh grazing. By July, the herds arrive at the Grumeti River, where they face the daunting challenge of crossing the crocodile-infested waters.

Those that survive this treacherous obstacle continue their journey towards the Masai Mara, where they stay until October. In November, as the rains begin again in the Serengeti, the herds start their journey back south, where they remain until the cycle begins anew the following year. This incredible migration cycle is one of the captivating spectacles you can witness during Tanzania Safari Holidays, showcasing the resilience of nature and the unending cycle of life and death.

The Serengeti Great Migration has a significant impact on the Serengeti Wildlife ecosystem, shaping the landscapes and affecting the biodiversity of the region. The large herds including the wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles play a crucial role in controlling the vegetation and maintaining the grasslands.  Their movements also spread nutrients and fertilize the soil which benefits other plants and animal species.
